How to Prepare a Cake Tin

Preparation of your cake tin is crucial to ensure your cake comes out in one piece, particularly when using novelty shaped tins.

You Will Need:

  • A pastry brush or paper towels
  • Solid vegetable shortening
  • Flour (or cocoa powder, this prevents the white film of flour on a chocolate cake while also adding extra flavour)

Step One:

Grease the inside of your tin with a generous amount of shortening, making sure any and all indentations are covered.

Step Two:

Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of flour (or cocoa powder if baking a chocolate cake) into the tin and tilt and rotate it to cover the entire surface. Turn your tin upside down and tap out any excess flour. If you have any uncovered spots, simply touch up with more grease and flour. Now you're ready to bake!

Step Three:

Once your cake has finished baking, let it cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Place a narrow knife in between the your cake and the cake tin, and gently run it around the edge. Place the wire rack over the top of your cake and flip both cake and cake tin upside down. Carefully lift the tin off the cake (it may require a few taps to release).

We also sell Wilton Cake Release and Wilton Bake Easy Non-Stick Spray which simplify the whole process even further! Just apply either product to your cake tin and you're ready to bake.
